The heart warming moment seemed too good to be true. It seemed it would be short-lived. More calls, rising in urgency called his name over and over again before being silenced with fast-paced gunfire. Only then did Oliver realize how dangerous the situation he had stepped into was, and how he couldn’t escape it any easier than the search party who risked their lives and lost them for him had escaped it. The pain was coming back to him and he was frozen in pain and fear, hands shakily curling around the small form of James, a teary smile lining his facial features. If he had to go, he was glad his final sight would be the shaking form of his goldfinch. The explosions sounded, heavy boots following closely, moving closer. They came close enough to hear the shouts and sound of orders being barked before the pace rose, and pain soon shot through the bloody calves of the young boy, clutching James tight enough to keep him out of harm’s way, but loose enough to allow him to escape.

No one paused to check the young boy. Some only paused; pondering that perhaps pressing the heels of their feet into his bones until they shattered would be a lesson to teach the young boy about stepping into a war zone for something petty, tweeting wildly. They all passed eventually, leaving the quivering mess of a child behind as he tried to run a thumb down the smooth down of James to comfort the small bird. His ears tuned into explosions and gunfire again, trying to move his mind out of thought of his legs, broken and mangled below his waist. He would count himself lucky that his legs above his knees were unharmed besides cuts that would heal eventually, if he escaped.

The explosions approached in a chain, nearing before he opened his hands, throwing them high with what strength was left in his frail form, forcing James to take flight, calling with his hoarse voice to tell him to fly away and escape before it was too late. He didn’t know if the bird listened before his vision was clouded with dirt as another explosion, too close for comfort, went off, knocking him to his side as his face pressed cruelly into sharp metal. It was all over once a final explosion sounded, rushing shrapnel and dirt along the ground to meet the eye pressed closed to the ground. Darkness followed.

A yellow eye shot open with a loud scream, sending a yellow bird into frantic flight around a simple lamp above the bed before it settled. His owner took deep breaths, shoulders raising and lowering dramatically with each breath. The door swung open with a large crashing following after as it nearly broke off its hinges, two figures standing in the light outside in the hall. A mop of curled blonde hair and unruly brunette bed head walked in and each took a seat on opposite sides of the freshly bandaged boy, wrapping inviting arms around him and each hushing him in a harmonising lullaby. His breathing slowed to a steady pace and the goldfinch took perch on the headboard, watching his owner with curious, beady eyes. Oliver’s sleep was once again ridden with that time not even a month ago, reminding him of the mistakes he was glad to make, but of the scars and shrapnel wounds that would never heal, leaving fresh pains with each time the bandages were renewed.
