History
Kaito is the first Japanese male Vocaloid released by Crypton Future Media on Febuary 17th, 2006. His voice was sampled from the Japanese male singer, Naoto Fuuga. At first, Kaito sold very little (only 500 packages in his initial distribution). After the success of Hatsune Miku, he became increasingly more popular as people started to recognize his potential.
As many fan of Kaito know, his character item is ice cream (although he is known to be a fan of Häagen-Dazs in particular).
It all started on September 16th, 2007 when Tatsunami uploaded to nico nico douga a parody of the song "Dear" from the visual novel Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni. He named his parody "A Request from Hatsune Miku".

The video begins with "please sometimes recall Kaito". Miku also sings, "Where are you and what are you doing now?" which is a lyric from the actual song "Dear You".
A few hours later, Ice-P uploads a video called "An Answer to Hatsune Miku"

He answers in writing "Yes? I was eating an ice cream" and proceeds to sing "Ice Cream no Uta" (The Ice Cream Song). The last thing Katio write is "Miku, lets eat it together next time."
At the time Ice-P saw Miku's Request, he happened to be making Kaito sing a cover of "Ice Cream no Uta".
Thus became the birth of Kaito's love of ice cream. It helped create a interest in him and many fans often depict him with ice cream.
Kaito is also known for his many parody songs, such as Daz is Cold (parody of Hatsune Miku's "Love is War"), ICE! (parody of Kagamine Len's "SPICE!"), My Ice Cream is Melting (parody of Hatsune Miku's "Melt"), Another: World is Mine (parody of Hatune Miku's "World is Mine" told from the male perspective. Arranged and originally sung by the Nico Nico singer, Anima), and Naked Meltdown (parody of Kagamine Rin's Meltdown).
Nowadays Kaito is mostly adopted by folk and rock producers, with a upcoming english voicebank and updates for VOCALOID3, Kaito is surely going to take the world.

Strenghts: Kaito has the largest range from the male vocaloids, also he's one of the most flexible vocaloids out there, the fact that he is from an old engine does not makes him less usable, in fact, aside from the old engine having a quite low quality of the synthesis, many users still prefer him due the amount of resources missing in the earlier engines.
Weakness: His most noticeable flaw is his slurred vowels transitions and his metalic voice. He's still considered a pretty easy-to-tune vocaloid, making him a good option for buyers!
