I heard once that Japan is really strict when it comes to copyright. So why are there so many MAD's, dance videos, lets plays, parody's etc? Do these people have to get special permission to do these things? Or is it like YT and they upload thing hoping they don't get pulled down?

Most of the YouTube Vocaloid fanbase is built on pretending it's still 2008

XD I have never, ever heard that Japan is strict when it comes to copyright. On the other hand, I've heard over and over that their copyright laws are a bit lax but it's mostly that the rightsholders don't really care. After all, it's free promotion and an essential part of the fan culture in Japan. Ban or take down some of this stuff and you risk losing potential customers. Companies just turn a blind eye to these things. A few rightsholders are more strict, though.

a little free advertisement can't hurt a company right? without these videos or whatever, I would never have found a lot of the stuff, and I've gotten others into it as well, spreading the popularity.
putting ads on costs the company money, which it could use instead to invest in more important things, fans who make these videos show their support and try to spread the word.
