Heading here friday afternoon

Wasn't sure if this belonged in Gamers Centeral or what, considering it is both discussion based and a bit of a Q&A set up.

1. Has anyone gone to something like this, either visually or musically (the art of Video Games at Madison Square, friends of Final Fantasy etc)

2. What's your take on the idea of video games being art (and please don't give me "it's sexy and I fap to X, Y times a day")? Why do you believe this?

3. Are you going to this event or have any events planned in your future? What's good?

I'd think up more questions but I think the first one takes the cake on the whole. I personally find video games (SoC/Ico are prime examples) as a form of artistic interpretation. When I get back from my duties today I'll go into further detail of them both and why I think this

but yea, just trying to guage the general audience here.

Well, I can certainly say that I've never been anywhere like that. (likely never will, because I never get out without being drug)

But, honestly, I do belive that in a way a Video Game is a form of art, as it is an expression of emotion in a very vivid and viable medium.
Serriously, some things that have been done in Video Games rival that of major movies and novels.
Some games are real tear-jerkers, others ignight a passion inside the hearts of millions.
Story, Grapical Design, Musical Composistion, and Presentation all wrapped in to one tiny package, and then having the player control or directly affect half of it.
...
Yeah, I'd call that art.

It depends. Some games are just blatant action and violence (like fps games, fighting games) but occasionally you get the thought provoking games. For example, LIMBO can be interpreted however you like, and that's why I consider it a form of art.

To answer your first question, nope, I've never been to one. But it does look cool, and I would probably go.

I 100% agree with this.

I've always thought Video Games were a kind of art. I mean.. "art" doesn't even just mean paintings, drawings, etc, it also means writing, music, etc.

And.. Video games just fit into it. Raven said everything I wanted to say. <3

And I'll mention Final Fantasy here. Some of them may lack in story or another thing, but damn do they make it up with the other stuff. And pretty much every FF game has made me cry. Do movies? No. Games? Yes.

Kuriko, FINAL FANTASY is awesome, there is always a sad part i each FF
Then, i care a lot about music in games.
Like in FF. The story is amazing. But the music. It is art.
I hate playing games with bad music or bad story.

Video game is art. Just take LIMBO or Journey. It's just amazing.

Video games are arts.

And the design, is like ... Amazing. Just take FINAL FANTASY XIII. Cutscene are just amazing. You can compare FFXIII to a movie.

Well, that's all I can say. Raven already said all.

I never even got close to crying over a movie. But some of the endings of the game ever17 got me close to tears.

Yeahh, I've rarely cried at a movie yet I always find myself crying at games. xD Probably because I see more of the characters, I get to know them more, and in turn, get more emotional connected to them...

I attended a Video Games Live concert last year with my siblings, it was amazing. I even bought an album and a t-shirt from them. It's pretty impressive to hear it live, and I'm already a video game music geek. X3

I actually kinda get peeved when people refuse to consider it art. I've come across a lot of people who refuse to believe video games (or any digital works, like 3D art, synthesized music like Vocaloid or even things made on GarageBand or something like that.) could even be considered art. I mean there are those games with amazing story, visuals, music etc, that you can't look at it and not call it art.

Video games = Many different mediums put together, not just the finished project, also everything that goes into it. Art? Yeah I'd say so.

Video games are a pretty valid form of storytelling, which I consider to be art. The parameters are a little different, because the character is You, but I don't think that negates the art-validity - - more like it enhances it, really. The blandest horror game is more terrifying to me than the worst horror movie, or the most uncanny valley picture. And when a character dies, I can actually get angry, which is not the sort of reaction I'd usually have to entertainment.

Errr, long story short even silly video games make me feel strong emotions, and I think that's pretty qualifiable as an art form.

That event sounds pretty cool, and I hope you have some fun! : D
YT Listing and Soundcloud (so that you may assess where I am musically), my vocaloid drawing/redesign thread (So that you can assess where I am, visual-artistically), I'm likely to have not updated either since 12/30/2012 and now you know what to expect from me 8 |

I haven't been to an exhibit like this solely focusing on Video Game, but one exhibit at the VAG had an animation exhibit on one time and they included videogames in that.

I'd consider them to be art, but then again maybe I'm biased seeing as I want to be a game designer/work in the video game industry

Late is late, anyway...

I've seen some moving FPSs before.
Medal of Honor for the PS3 was one of them.
Aside, even blatant random violence can be considered a form of Art.

Ehh, it's depending on how you define art. One may call something art, but other people may not.

According to the majority definitions, though, video game is DEFINITELY a piece of art. Storytelling is an art. Music is an art. Visual presentation is an art. Video Game has all of the above, PLUS interactivity. I cannot see how it is not considered a form of artistic expression.

"That's why Youtube is the largest entertainment site.
Not only the videos are a form of entertainment, but also the comments have their own genre.
There's drama, comedy, horror, suspense, thriller, zombie (comments that are just plain brainless), action, and even motivational (ones that provoke you to do something, punching babies included)"
