It's quite easy to wear one, and I don't think that anyone really looks bad in them. The Hakama take a while to get used to for some people just because they are so loose and free moving some people just don't feel comfortable in them. But the whole outfit is really quite easy to throw on.

If I were to wear Japanese clothing out and about, I'd probably go with the haori/hakama combo rather than a kimono. I'd be concerned about getting a fancy kimono dirty, for one, while hakama (whether rightly or no) strike me as more utilitarian.

Nope, only when I'm working as a kimono vendor. And even then it's just a matter of showing off the merchandise and attracting customers, and it's only a yukata. Even yukata can be difficult to work in if you're not used to it, but they are considerably easier to function in than a traditional kimono. My sister used to try working wearing a full get-up. She could not bend over or sit in a chair properly.
I suppose I might wear my yukata at cons or something, but it's really too impracticle to wear out in normal public, and you look pretty silly, at least around here.

Ah. The good days when immature unrequited love was so naive. The feeling is compared to being hit by a bus. I blame the Narwhals. Flooding the cliff side where the path used to be so clear. Now, my world is underwater.

Well cotton actually makes for some really nice kimonos and really comfortable ones. Not every kimono of high quality is made from silk simple because in some situations silk is not the best fabric. Like say winter time, silk is very cold and does not conduct heat as well as cotton does, so some people request kimonos to be made of a warmer fabric, usually cotton poly mix.
